"Newton started playing with Wichita Cudahy Packing Co. in 1934. He played with that team until 1941 when he entered the Army, where he continued his baseball playing.

"AFTER DISCHARGE from the Army in 1945, Newton signed a contract with the Homestead Grays, a Negro team in Philadelphia. "But by that time age had caught up with me as far as pro baseball was concerned," Newton said. He returned to Coffeyville where he became a switchman for the North American Car Co. and a catcher for Coffeyville Boosters and Texacs baseball teams.
Newton joined joined Shaffer's Altamont team 10 years ago. "There has been no big change in baseball since I started playing," the catcher said. "I am playing with faster kids now." He laughed off the suggestion he may be slowing up."
