Lots of really good old pictures and info.
"The 1948/49 season was an amazing one for attendances in English football. Hull City, for example, saw 19 of their 21 home League matches attract 30,000+ crowds - not bad for a Third Division side! Their top League attendance was on Christmas morning 1948 when 49,655 were present at Boothferry Park for their top-of-the-table clash with Rotherham United. That was the record-ever Division 3 (North) attendance with Hull winning the match 3-2 which helped them pip their Yorkshire rivals to the title and with it the one promotion place from the division that season. But that 49,655 wasn't the best at Boothferry Park that season - 55,019 were present at their FA Cup quarter-final tie with Manchester United - an all-time record Hull home crowd. The amazing interest in that cup-tie is shown in the picture which, amazingly, is just the fans queuing for tickets for the match on the Sunday before the fixture. Around 30,000 tickets were up for grabs but some 75,000 turned up to try to buy them. Around 2,000 camped out overnight to be at the front of the queue with dozens ending up needing medical treatment due to feinting and crush injuries."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Re-election_(Football_League) Until 1986, teams that finished poorly - last three spots in 3rd division, last four in 4th - had to apply for reelection to the Football League. Non-league teams could apply.

1932-7-22 (Caernarfon, Wales) A movement to resurrect pro football in Caernarvon is underway. "Professional football in Caernarvon, after flourishing for four years, came to an abrupt end two seasons ago. During their brief but brilliant career the Athletic F.C. were the champions of the Welsh National League in the first year of their existence; runners up a season later, and in the last season created a surprise by advancing as far as the second round proper of the English Cup.
"In that year Caernarvon's name gained wide publicity on the strength of the notable achievements of its team - the best advertising media the town ever had...."
"Soon after [their success in the F.A. Cup] the directors of the club found themselves in financial difficulties, and though heroic effort was made to carry on until the completion of the season, the players departed and the team broke up."
Enthusiastic meeting over the admission of Bangor F.C. into the Birmingham Football League. The team had a surplus of £26 17s. for the season, and their total liabilities were reduced from £982 to £838. "The latter had been attained by the generous action of a number of creditors in making allowances from their accounts, and others in cancelling their holdings of cricket certificates."
"After full consideration, it was decided by a large majority to fix the membership fees at £1 5s. for ground and stand, and £1 1s. for ground only, these figures being considerably lower than those of Colwyn Bay and Rhyl."

Birmingham & District League
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Midlands_(Regional)_League
Established in 1889. "Once the league's structure settled down, it came to be regarded as one of the strongest leagues outside the Football League itself, rivalled only by the Southern League and the Midland League."
Its coverage was much greater than Birmingham. Teams from Wales etc.
In the mid-50s it absorbed its competitor, the Birmingham Combination.
In its early days it attracted good crowds; 3K to a game in 1899. Attendance gradually declined but in the 1960s Kidderminster Harriers was still able to draw 1K a game. By 2005-06, average attendance was 50 or so.
1932-7-22 (Holyhead, Wales) Bangor F.C. admitted into the Birmingham Football League.

Midland Football League. (1889-1982)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midland_Football_League_(1889)
Second pro league formed. In the early days, there was overlap between the Football League and the Midland League - Football League teams might be relegated to the Midland League, Midland champs might be promoted to the Football League. As the larger pro clubs became stronger, they placed their reserve sides in the Midland League. By 1905-ish, half the teams in the Midland League were reserve sides.
Peterborough United, which won five straight titles from 1955-56 to 1959-60, was the last Midland League club to be elected to the Football League.
Wiki article lists clubs promoted to the Football League, of which there were 28.

Southern Football League (1894-)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Football_League
Pro football & pro sports in general developed more slowly in the south of England than the north. Rivalled Football League around the turn of the century.
"In 1920, virtually the entire top division of the Southern League was absorbed by the Football League to become that league's new Third Division."
