1896-10-31 Hartford. "Richard Tookey, about 35, of Naugatuck, an employee of the Goodyear India Rubber Company, committed suicide Thursday night by taking rough on rats. Despondency over the death of his brother is believed to have been the cause. He leaves a wife and four children."
1911-10-24 New Haven via Bridgeport. Dick Tuckey has pitched phenomenal ball for the Franklins this season. His catcher, Fred Campbell, is likewise mighty fine. About.
1917-5-06 Hartford. TR.
1935-10-07 Hartford. "Dick Tuckey, Jr., may not mean much to the present generation of baseball fans, but to those who were knocking around in the days of the old Connecticut League, the name of Dick Tuckey brings to mind a blond-thatched pitcher who was a pretty good right-hander.
The Tuckey name is being carried on by that former pitcher's son and in college football, not the diamond sport.
Dick Tuckey Jr., contributed the longest run of Manhattan's 59 to 7 win Saturday over Brooklyn College when he galloped 80 yards behind some nifty blocking to score one of Manhattan's nine touchdowns. Tuckey scored another touchdown on a shorter run."
1973-2-17 Naugatuck CT. Richard Tuckey Sr. Died 1973-2-15. Buried in St. James Cemetery. Excelled with baseball teams around the state.
1937-8-02 Waterbury. "A six base hit for you is a homerun for Lightning Dick Tuckey, who can clout that there apple in the pinch, but runs like Shanty Hogan, Siamese Twins style."
1972-1-10 Naugatuck CT. Jr. elected to Naugatuck HOF - one of greatest local athletes of all - son of another star athlete.
1974-12-26 Richard Tuckey Jr. obit. NFL star. Starred in baseball in the Waterbury City Amateur League.
1901-4-29 Naugatuck. "Thomas Tookey, a well known Naugatuck baseball player, is being tried by the Derby league team. He pitched for Derby in Saturdays' game and made a splendid showing both as a twirler and batsman. His fine work delighted the Derbyites and if he continues to do as good work will probably become a regular member of the team. Tookey's many friends here believe that he is fully competent to pitch for any of the league teams."
1901-5-01 Naugatuck. Pitched again and made another good impression - he is "remarkably cool, as well as possessing a fine arm and good curves."
1901-8-16 Naugatuck. "Thomas Tookey of the Derby base ball team is in town to-day calling on friends."
1902-4-21 Naugatuck. "Thomas Tookey of the Hartford baseball team spent Sunday [4-20] with friends in town."
1903-12-07 Meriden. "News has reached this state of the marriage of Thomas H. Tuckey, the star pitcher of the New Haven base ball team, to Miss Mary Carroll, of New Haven, the wedding taking place in New York recently. Tuckey is now at his home in Naugatuck and will remain there until the opening of the baseball season."
1914-3-19 Lincoln Journal-Star. "One of the players included in the wholesale suspension decree handed down at Hastings is Tom Tuckey, the former Lincoln southpaw. Following his release from Lincoln last summer Tummas [sic] landed with the Hastings. club and about set fire to the State league, winning seven games and losing none and batting at a .341 clip. The Hastings management was notoriously liberal with its players, which surely means that Tuckey was well compensated, yet this year finds him holding out."
1914-3-20 Hastings NE. "Lincoln Daily News: [3-19 article]
*
We know but little concerning the Liberality of the Hastings management in the Tuckey case but Hastings fans probably recall that while Tuckey was some twirler, he could scarcely have been said to be one of the flames of the league. And regarding that seven game proposition. Forget it. Mexico."
1914-3-21 York NE. Included on the suspension list at Hastings.
1914-3-28 Holyoke. Dan O'Neill, who owned many different clubs in the CTSL, visited New Haven yesterday - "Dan told of some of the old-time meetings of the directors when they would sit in trunks in the express offices at the different railroad stations and transact their business. He referred to the meeting at the time Pitcher Tom Tuckey, then with New Haven, was fined for pitching independent ball, and of the hard fought battle put up at the directors' meeting over this matter. This was the time Bridgeport won the pennant from New Haven over the technicality of Tuckey being suspended and some games he won being thrown out."
Good memories of CTSL days. O'Neill thinks the good days are gone - current players just in it for the money.
