    Les Lollis, top pitcher, was black - was named MVP of 1946 NBC.

    1925-6-08 Wives battle on the side-lines
    1946-8-28 (Wichita) The Carmichael Firemen are the Cinderella story of this year's tournament. They are the only undefeated team, having won 20 games without a loss.
        Carmichael has an average age of 28. "The players are mostly homebreds and not many are ex-pros."
    1946-9-05 (Wichita) Pic of Les Lollis, who was named the NBC MVP. Tied the tournament record for wins with four - the record was set by Satchel in 1935.
        The Canadian-American world series - Carmichael v. Windsor - begins tonight. Both teams have identical records of 20-2.
    1947-7-24 Benny Salas ineligible to play bc under suspension by pro club
    1947-7-28 Ben Salas and Les Lollis combined for a perfect game for the Carmichael Firemen over Chapel of Oaks. Salas threw five perfect innings and was replaced by Lollis because the thousand-strong crowd wanted to see him pitch. Closest call was on the grounder hit by Harlan Pool, former coast leaguer.

    1979-7-09 Brief profile of Les Lollis. Is 57 years old. Worked as an expeditor at McClellan AFB for 36 years. He's retired from that job but continues to work as a consultant for the Northern California Officials Association. Was an early black umpire, and filled in for ten games in the 1957 PCL when a regular was sick.

    1925-7-06 (SF Bulletin) The pitchers' mound at Willows is four feet closer to the feet than it should be, which gives a "wonderful advantage to Frank Juney, who not only uses an underhanded delivery, but every type of 'doctoring' that has ever been known in the national pastime. These freak deliveries, most of which have banned from organized ball, are extremely wicked and dangerous to batters.    \
    "Juney is the pitcher that Ty Cobb on his tour to the coast seven years ago refused to bat against because of the uncanny manner that Juney plied his trade."

    1927-10-05 (Colusa) In William Harrington Field Colusa has the best semi-pro field in the valley - maybe even in the state. Mickey Shader was 19-8. 
    Oakland PCL has signed John Bordes, Sterling Hammack, and Tod Matzka for tryouts next spring. Their catcher, Thompson, was also offered a trial but refused for business reasons. 
    Ray Bally, Chico Colts catcher, played a large part of the championship game with a lacerated forearm.
    Alan Rice, Colts 3b, is leaving for SF where he plans to play winter ball. Mickey Shader hopes to lead a team and have Rice at third.

    "Incidentally, Vincent Stanich, writing a Sacramento bush ball column, sounded the wrong note when he remarked the Valley League's decision to permit each team as many as four outside men will mean that capital winter leaguer's have struck "pay dirt" once again. 
    None of the valley teams intend to cut the purse strings to get outside talent for the reason that they cannot afford to meet extravagant demands. The old system in vogue a decade ago, wherein top salaries were paid to bring in top pitchers and heavy hitters, cannot be restored. The league rules now ban all forms of outright salary payments, but those winter leaguers who would like to play Sunday ball in the valley, and receive suitable expense allowances, will be accommodated."
    "The senior valley loop has long been compared in caliber to class D leagues, although it cannot claim that rating since games are only played once a week."

    1953-8-20 300 fans attended Appreciation Night - the last game of the season - and saw the Colusa Pruners beat Yuba City 5-3. The fans donated $263.59 to the Pruners. The Glenn County Cardinals got the $270 pot for winning the championship. Oroville got $180 for finishing second.

    1954-7-24 The Chico Colts and Oroville Olives are arch SVL rivals of Butte County. Doug Weiss, Olives pitcher, dropped a box on his pitching hand while working in an Oroville box factory. Oroville line-up, with full names. Includes Mickey Risberg.

A host of Willows fans came down to Woodland yesterday and helped swell the gate into the largest of this or any other recent season, but coming for the purpose of watching a padded Willows crew humble the "Boastful Woodlanders." They returned to Willows sadder, but wiser, and in the knowledge that Woodland really has something to be boastful of - exactly what Woodland has claimed, in fact. That is the greatest baseball team in the semi-professional ranks in California, and perhaps the greatest in America......"
    Gate receipts from yesterday were $916.40 - total attendance probably about 2,500. Half of Woodland's $450 debt still to go.

Profile of Yorton, this year's manager. Played two years of pro ball in Cubs chain in WI - played in NVSL in 1938.
    In the 1930s players who lived on the wrong side of the river could not play for Yuba City. This is no longer the case - so now Yorton can be a member of the team.
