1919-6-08 Games to be played from Mon-Wed, 6-09 to 6-11.
"This is the first season that colored teams, with the exception of the soldier boys last year, have been allowed to play at Poncey, and there is a determination among the colored people to support their teams, which indicates that there will be a record-breaking crowd to witness the initial encounter on Monday afternoon. Most of the colored businesses will be closed in time for their employees to see the game and many white firms have expressed a willingness to allow their help to attend.
Besides the opportunity of witnessing Cubans in action on a baseball diamond and of seeing an exciting game, the Camp Gordon jazz band will furnish music and add to the entertainment of the fans.
On Monday the convalescent soldiers, both white and colored, will be admitted free. Tuesday will be ladies' day and there will probably be a double-header on Wednesday afternoon. A special section of the grand stand will be reserved for the whites. The colored fans are urged to bring the ladies out to see the opening game tomorrow afternoon as they will have access to the grand stand.

1947-8-01 Vets captured title.
"The live spirit of the hustling Vets should be credited to Shiro Yamaguchi, the pre-war shortstopping ace of the Western Giants, and Joe Kesamaru, the lightning-shifty ex-college and prep star. The two combined their talents to keep the never-say-die Vets much intact."
1950-5-03 Nisei Vets 3, Teamsters 14. Western Giants 8, Eastlake Merchants 1.
1951-4-11 Nisei Vets and Western Giants will combine for team in Puget Sound League.
1952-1-01 "After Richard Tsuji injured his throwing arm, Managers Shoichi Suyama and Joe Kesamaru of NVC called on Sasaki to carry the pitching load, and Sasaki, although off to a slugging start, finished like Citation in the long stretch. A hurler with more stuff on the ball than any Nisei hereabouts today, Sasaki was largely responsible for NVC's rousing second-half comeback in the Puget Sound league last season."
"Ray Saito, infielder-outfielder for Nisei Veterans - Possibly the most outstanding Nisei baseball player in the Pacific Northwest. Saito was a feared batsman for the N.V.C. outfit in the P.S. circuit. As an outfielder in '51, he was second to none as far as his smooth fielding and timely hitting were concerned. To the Vets he was as valuable, though not as colorful, as Jim Rivera was to the Seattle Rainiers. Saito was the ace in the NVC fly-chasing department."

Los Angeles Nippons
'The Los Angeles Nippon were organized in the 1920's and were originally known as the Los Angeles Japanese. They had a number of talented players including T. Ikadaki, Mori Miyahara, Isozaki and OshioSammy Yakahashi  [Takahashi] was their flashy shortstop and best player. In 1930, he earned a tryout with the Los Angeles Angels of the Pacific Coast League.
On April 13, the Giants engaged the Los Angeles Nippon in what was billed as "the Japanese World Series". Such hyperbole was often employed to hype games. Between 1927 and 1936, the Nippon nine from the City of Angels hosted ten games with Japanese college teams and five more with the 1935 and 1936 editions of the newly-organized Japanese professionals. Eiji Sawamura's reputation as the pitcher who struck out four American League All-Stars in succession, including legendary Babe Ruth, led to White Sox Park being filled to its capacity of 5,000 for all three games. Sawamura (left), Victor Starffin and Kenichi Aoshiba made quick order of their Nippon brothers and swept the series. The Giants' record when facing semi-professional or local teams in California was a remarkable 7 - 1."

1936-2-09 Santa Barbara. Nippons in CWL? Will face White Sox. Matsuura stole the show from Satchel Paige in their previous encounter.

1936-1-19 Santa Barbara White Sox 2, L.A. Nippons 1. Matsuura lost pitching duel with Paige. 1000 fans - biggest crowd since Paige appeared last spring. Paige wore the uniform of Lloyd "Shires" Erhard, White Sox manager.

Good article.

Lots of information about family.

"The Giants scheduled several games with squads consisting primarily of Japanese-Americans such as the San Jose Asahi, the Fresno Athletic Club, the Los Angeles Nippon and the Stockton Yamato.
On March 27th, they squared off against the San Jose Asahi. The Asahi were a local ball team in a community proud of its heritage. The game was played at the Asahi Baseball Park, a stadium constructed in 1926 and built entirely by the local Nikkei (Japanese-Americans of all generations) community. There was considerable interest in the up-coming contest against what was perceived locally as "the powerful visitors from across the Pacific." The Tokyo Giants' lean but highly talented pitching corps was both admired and feared.
Local fans had high hopes for their team. Pitching sensation Russell Noburo Hinaga (right) was considered excellent at every position he played. Fans and media  alike referred to him as "Mr. Baseball." He was the oldest of the three Hinaga brothers. He started his brilliant career at the age of 15, joining the San Jose Asahi team when they were first organized in 1918. In 1925, Hinaga had toured the Orient with the Asahis, pitching against Japan's leading Universities including the powerful unit from Waseda. At one stretch he had compiled a sparkling record of 29 and 2. In the outfield, the Asahi had George "Moon" Ikeda, who it is said never dropped a fly ball. Ikeda roamed the outfie"ld pasture utilizing a glove from which he had removed all the stuffing. There was also Chitoshi "T-bone" Akizuki, whose speed left fielders flailing in the dust.
Not surprisingly, the game turned out to be a pitching duel between Victor Starffin and Hinaga. Going into the bottom of the ninth, the Giants held a slim 2 - 1 lead. Ky Miyamoto led off for the host club with a clean single to right. A walk and a hit batter soon loaded the bases. Manager Daisuke Miyake did not have the luxury of going to the bullpen to bring in a late closer. This would be Starffin's game to win or lose.
Harry Kamemoto tried to execute a squeeze play but could not handle Starffin's blazing fastballs and struck out on three pitches. Unfortunately for Starffin, his catcher also had difficulty with the strikeout pitch and it got by him for a passed ball and the tying run scored. Starffin struck out the next two batters. With the score knotted at two and with two out and the bases loaded, who else but "Mr. Baseball", Russel/Russell Hinaga, swung hard at a Starffin fastball, drilling it through second base to drive in Adrian Yamamoto with the winning run. In 2015, this "big game" was still remembered by former Asahi players such as Frank "Tarzan" Shiraki, age 91, of San Jose. He is among the dwindling circle off former players whose exploits were an integral part of Japanese-American baseball history."

Although it has been said that all of the members of Mr. Aratani's team worked at the produce company, Ken Kitasako once told me that Mr. Aratani simply chose the best baseball players in the valley, no matter where they worked. His team was made up of Portuguese, Mexican-American and Japanese players. When he took his team to Japan in 1927 the young men competed against Japanese teams, winning 25 games, losing four and tying one."

25th Infantry Wreckers

1913-1-17 Regiment arrives - pics.

Patrick Rock -

Bullet Rogan

1915-7-02 Made HI debut for Third Battalion on June 30.
"The chief interest in the game was the first appearance on the local diamond of Rogan, late of the Twenty-fourth Infantry, who arrived on the last transport. There is hardly a company commander in the Twenty-fifth Infantry, who has not made a bid for this man's assignment to his company without success. The ultimate assignment of Rogan is still a matter of conjecture. As the recruit company is attached to the First Battalion, his appearance this afternoon with that team was allowed. He played the first three innings at third base and made a great impression. He looks like the classiest infielder the regiment has had in some time. In the fourth he went into the box and here his success was even more pronounced. He had worlds of speed and a quick delivery following a leisurely windup that is in itself puzzling to any batter. At the bat, he had three chances and in each case met the first ball pitched on the nose, but each time in the direction of some fielder."
1915-8-24 Newly elected field captain of 25th Infantry.
1916-5-10 "The second game between the Machine Gun Company and Company I was all Rogan. He went to the mound for the battery team and the Company I batters seemed greatly in fear of his speed ball.
Rogan was all smiles and gave them speed or slow balls, floaters or fadeaways and every other kind of pitch known to baseball on demand with the same result for every offering. Two hits of the scratch variety were all the opposing batters could get."

1917-3-24 On furlough - to pitch for White Sox
1917-3-24 Half of "insular fandom" thinks Rogan is on way - half thinks he is in Honolulu.
1917-3-24 Will play different position every Sunday
1917-3-26 Beat Western Pool 10-2 - allowed but one hit, a single in the 9th by Jess Orndorff. Joe Pirrone was opposing pitcher.
1917-3-26 Also hit three triples
Looked at other papers to see if any better coverage but no.

1925-6-28 Marysville has signed Hunky Schorr
1925-7-06 (SF Bulletin) The pitchers' mound at Willows is four feet closer to the feet than it should be, which gives a "wonderful advantage to Frank Juney, who not only uses an underhanded delivery, but every type of 'doctoring' that has ever been known in the national pastime. These freak deliveries, most of which have banned from organized ball, are extremely wicked and dangerous to batters.    \
"Juney is the pitcher that Ty Cobb on his tour to the coast seven years ago refused to bat against because of the uncanny manner that Juney plied his trade."
1927-4-24 (Sacramento Union) Game previews. Results of the Sacramento-LA game will be announced during the Heesemans-Colusa game.
1927-10-05 (Colusa) In William Harrington Field Colusa has the best semi-pro field in the valley - maybe even in the state. Mickey Shader was 19-8.
Oakland PCL has signed John Bordes, Sterling Hammack, and Tod Matzka for tryouts next spring. Their catcher, Thompson, was also offered a trial but refused for business reasons.
Ray Bally, Chico Colts catcher, played a large part of the championship game with a lacerated forearm.
Alan Rice, Colts 3b, is leaving for SF where he plans to play winter ball. Mickey Shader hopes to lead a team and have Rice at third.

1936-3-28 (Woodland) Lots of local ads in connection w/ Oaks. Quotes from Colusa & Woodland managers.

1938-3-08 George Lial signs with Marysville Giants.
"Incidentally, Vincent Stanich, writing a Sacramento bush ball column, sounded the wrong note when he remarked the Valley League's decision to permit each team as many as four outside men will mean that capital winter leaguer's have struck "pay dirt" once again.
None of the valley teams intend to cut the purse strings to get outside talent for the reason that they cannot afford to meet extravagant demands. The old system in vogue a decade ago, wherein top salaries were paid to bring in top pitchers and heavy hitters, cannot be restored. The league rules now ban all forms of outright salary payments, but those winter leaguers who would like to play Sunday ball in the valley, and receive suitable expense allowances, will be accommodated."
"The senior valley loop has long been compared in caliber to class D leagues, although it cannot claim that rating since games are only played once a week."
Valley class B league formed for 23-and-under players.

    1925-7-12 Woodland 13, Willows 4. Box + standings.
"They no longer brand us "Boastful Woodland" up Willows way. A host of Willows fans came down to Woodland yesterday and helped swell the gate into the largest of this or any other recent season, but coming for the purpose of watching a padded Willows crew humble the "Boastful Woodlanders." They returned to Willows sadder, but wiser, and in the knowledge that Woodland really has something to be boastful of - exactly what Woodland has claimed, in fact. That is the greatest baseball team in the semi-professional ranks in California, and perhaps the greatest in America......"
Gate receipts from yesterday were $916.40 - total attendance probably about 2,500. Half of Woodland's $450 debt still to go.
