1916-8-27 Preview. "With the playing of yesterday contests of the Memphis Associated Amateurs the third annual championship baseball series as on its way, and if the contests of yesterday can be taken as a criterion, the games of 1916 bid fair to eclipse any previous series that the amateurs have undertaken.
The teams participating in the series have undergone a world of trouble that the public is unaware of, and in justice to the teams performing in this series it must be stated that every team taking part in the series was forced to go down in their jeans and come across with the necessary funds that it takes to finance games of this nature.
The Memphis Associated Amateurs are now in the neighborhood of $1,000 in debt, and the organization could not see its way clear to finance the series. It was found that the only way out of the muddle was for the teams to put up a specified amount, and as all the teams have done so the public is assured of some interesting games of baseball.
President Henry Loeb of the Associated Amateurs calls upon every baseball fan in the city to attend the contests of the M. A. A.
The Memphis Associated Amateurs have done a world of good during the past season," said Mr. Loeb. "Our little organization is now in debt for a nice sum of money, but if the people of the city will attend our games will no doubt break even on the season, and we will be in a better position to help the boys and girls of Memphis. Next season we are contemplating great things for the fans of the city, and we would like to start our 1917 campaign with a clean slate."
A small admission fee will be charged at these games. The M. A. A. has been more than generous during the past year, as it has let every one into their games free of charge."

1915-3-28 Pics of league officials and managers - Lehman Bender is Fishers MG. Four teams: Virginia Bridge, Winfreys, Philippis, and Fishers. Season schedule.
"At first the league had the idea in mind to branch their circuit out into a six and possibly an eight club [league], but lack of suitable playing quarters proved too great a detriment for the league to ponder over and the old policy of a four team league was adhered to."
"It has also been officially announced that there will be no Fraternal League the coming season and the dropping out of this organization greatly enhances the value of the league giving the public a better style of bail than was at first anticipated, although at the same time it is to be regretted that this worthy league has to quit. The Fraternal League, during the years of its existence produced some mighty clever performers and these, with several other players that the City League has an eye on, will be taken care of and placed with the proper teams in order to insure an even and enthusiastic race."
This is Lehman Bender's first season as a manager.

"In the second game Manager Kent will spring a surprise on the multitude when he uncorks the remaining pair of his added trio. Orth Collins and Lehman Bender are the new ones, Red Colbert being shoved in last Sunday. Bender, the biggest bulk of amateur talent in the city and long known as a swatting City Leaguer, will essay slab duty for Kent, while Collins, a professional and well known hereabouts, will be stationed at the second turn. Colbert will stack up at third and Gavin will be at short. Hill, of course, will stick around the first turn. The new material ought to convert a rank outsider into a squad fighting for an upper berth. Every one of the three new men can hit like wildfire, and the Owls will face a hard proposition nailing at Bender's smoke ball with any success. Bender is a six-footer, with plenty of beef and brawn.
Nashville City League
Cashin of the Owls swears in three different languages that he will never be headed, and that last week was positively the last scrap that would be dropped. The Cashin squad is a mighty formidable array of amateurs, and with just a touch of luck should remain at the top. The infield and outfield are both airtight, and every man in the corral is a swatter. Haack, Slattery and Benham form a snappy outfield, and Hunt, Callahan, Claypool and Norman are fast infielders. Karr and Peterson will work for the Owls, opposed by Bender and Byers.

1913-8-31 Preview. "Big Lehman Bender has come back to the Knight machine, with his sole aim to down the Beavers. Bender was with the K. of Ce for a couple of Sundaye and mowed his way through the foe like an elephant brushing through the Jungle. The report leaked out that the Beavers said they could drive him to the woods any day in the week. Bender held to the opposite, but never had the chance to prove his claim.
Bender has the speed and the frame to drop most any kind of a team, and if the Beavens wallop him to the bench they can boast of a feat that has never been done before.
Parham will oppose Bender on the slab. Parham is not a small fellow by any means, but still he lacks the build of Bender His right arm is capable of delivering various assortmente of foolers, however, and that is why Jehl signed him up.
On the whole the Beavers have a classy team, as their position today testifies.
The first game starts at 2:30 o'clock. Take Main Street (New Raleigh Road or Jones Avenue) car to reach the park Proceeds donated to charity. Ladies free."

Roster listed, with full names. Had Lehman Bender at 1b. Only two in picture are died - and all but one of the living are in business in Memphis.
Included in pic is Guy Haines, their chief rooter.
"Haines is remembered by the older patrons of Red Elm Park (now Russwood Park) and where the Turtles (now the Chicks) played their games, as probably the most conscientious rooter a Memphis team ever had. One of Haines' daily performances before a game was to kneel at home plate and pray for the Turtles to win. Charlie Frank (not the Frank in the above picture), was manager of the Turtles of those days."
1949-10-08 Lehman George Bender obit. Was owner and operator of Bender's Garage for 34 years. Dead at 63 after month-long illness. A Catholic. Spent most of his leisure hunting and fishing and later years. Played amateur baseball for many years.
