1960-7-29 Tyler beat Jasper 1-0 on forfeit after Jasper was left with only eight players. Alex Triggs, who had hit two homers, was ejected after protesting too much to an umpire. The score had been tied 6-6. Jasper is eliminated from the tournament.

1961-7-31 The Jasper Steers won the 17th annual state colored tournament. The final was an exciting back-and-forth game v. Fort Worth. Triggs was the star; he doubled twice and singled twice, driving in three runs. He won the tournament batting title with a mark of .470.

1964-8-04 The Austin Palominos will face the Nacogdoches All-Stars; the Palominos lost in finals - it was their second straight year going to finals.

1963-8-07 Profile of Amos Gray. Underwent knee operation; the Pirates have a spot for him if his knees are right. Amos won 10 games and hit in the high .300s for the Moore High Lions in 1961; 14 major league teams wanted him. Had trouble with his knees in his time in KCA organization; they sent him to a specialist and evidently didn't like what they saw. That was Aug. 1961. Didn't pitch again until summer of '62 - he won 13 games for the Waco Red Legs and hit about .320. He was their only pitcher. This year he was one of four pitchers but still went 6-1.
1963-8-09 Gray "credits the Crippled Children's Hospital for helping finance his knee operation last week rather than the Kiwanis club."
1964-3-10 Gray joined LAD as free agent - has not been informed yet if he will have a minor league roster spot.
1965-4-25 Will pitch for Waco Red Legs. [Or Waco Eagles? Ambiguous.]

1963-8-25 The Old Pro Negro Baseball Players of Abilene will play a benefit game for man injured trying to break up fight - full names.

The Jasper Steers went defunct after 1964.

Dallas Victory League
1943 Grand Prairie Naval Air Station 16-1

Altizer, Quentin p - pro debut at 27 - good in TL
1943 Navy 15-2 for season; undefeated within league; has thrown no-hitter.
Mort, Roy 1943 Navy made pro debut at 16

1943-6-17 (Dallas via Austin) About half of the league's players are former pros. Quentin Altizer has been receiving offers from big league teams for years but he's always refused them. You don't make enough money unless you play in the majors; Altizer has never wanted to be sent to a farm club.
""I want the manager to tell me several days in advance when I'm going to pitch," [Altizer] explained. "Then I can worry about it and when I get on the mound I'm on edge and ready to go. I guess in that way I just get all the worry out of my system beforehand."
Altizer has a 9-1 record this year. His only loss was in a non-league game vs. Waco Army Flying School in which WSH Sid Hudson opposed him.
"Altizer can see all right except for such things as the fingers of a catcher below his mitt. Thus he had to figure out some way of the receiver giving him signals than the customary fingers below mitt system.
"He thinks too much night work weakened his eyes. One season he worked from 1 a. m. to 1 p. m. went home and slept a couple of hours, then got out to the ball park by 6 p. m. for a night game. "Why, I have gone for a week with no more than 12 hours sleep," he said."

1926-5-03 league will be a developing ground for young players.
1926-5-12 San Antonio's amateur clubs are bleeding stars to the Gulf Coast League.
1926-8-07 Paul Flynn, Austin HS catcher, is going to try out for Kingsville.
1926-8-23 Edinburg replaces Victoria. Edinburg has been playing in Rio Grande Valley League and is currently playing Brownsville for its championship. Both Victoria and Edinburg players will play for Edinburg club.
1926-8-24 Judge Landis will investigate league.
1926-8-25 "The Gulf Coast League has demonstrated that professional baseball does not pay in a small city. Victoria had a similar experience in the Southwest Texas League but it was thought that with a lower salary limit and a more compact circuit that another league team could be maintained but that was not the case and it probably will be many years before Victoria enters such a venture again...
It is not surprising that league baseball should prove unprofitable in towns like Victoria, Corpus Christi, Laredo, Beeville, Mission, and Kingsville when cities like San Antonio, Waco, Austin, Beaumont, and Galveston have lost money on professional baseball. Not until this year has San Antonio, a city over 200,000 inhabitants, made any money out of its club, and the only reason for its success this year is that it has a winning team."
1926-9-02 Edinburg's series with Brownsville came to no decision.
1926-9-13 Victoria Rosebuds have been playing good ball since withdrawing from league - have steamrolled the finest semi-pro competition. In the Gulf Coast League championship series Edinburg has won two games and Laredo has won one. Edinburg qualified because it replaced Victoria when Victoria withdrew, and Victoria won the first-half title.
