1956-2-25 Cappy Harada, Yomiuri Giants GM, responsible for the Hawaiians in Japanese ball.
"As a result of Yonamine's accomplishments, other outstanding local players like Jyun Hirota, Bill Nishita, Douglas Matsuoka, Andy Miyamoto, Len Kasparovitch, James Doole, Sal Recca, Kats Kojima, Shin Yogi, Brown Watabu, Tomo Kai, Dopey Morita, Dick Kashiwaeda, Charlie Luis, James McCabe, Larry Yaji and Dick Kitamura have since played in the pay game in Japan."

Asahis
"Ironically, however, that same year, the issue of race put Asahi fans on opposite sides of the fence. At the center of the controversy was Ted Shaw, an outstanding southpaw pitcher who had played with the Philadelphia Royal Giants of the Negro League. Shaw had fallen in love with the islands after playing an exhibition game in Hawai‘i—so much so that he decided to stay. He was hired as a player for a team in Hawaii’s Commercial League, and he also played for the all-haole (Caucasian) Wanderers of the Hawaii Baseball League, but what he wanted most was to play for the Asahis—and in 1933, the team was in dire need of the powerhouse pitcher like Shaw."
Asahis rejected Shaw.

"Regardless of whether the Asahis come through with another victory, it is fitting that a charter member of the club, like myself, tell the history of the Asahis, as this is their silver anniversary year. The club was formed back in 1906.
There have been hundreds of baseball clubs in this territory, but when oldtime fans get together to discuss games of the past you hear them mention the names of three clubs more than any others, the Elks, Honirons and Asahis.
Played at Makiki
The Elks were members of the senior league in the days when games were played at Makiki field. Other members of the league were the H. A. Cs, Kams, Maile Ilimas and Punahous. The Elks have slipped a great deal since then and no longer make such a strong bid for championships.
The Honiron or H. I. W. team played in the winter league at Kapiolani park, other members of the league being the Aalas, Diamond. Heads, Alohas and Makikis.
That was in the days when De Ponte was a smart little pitcher and Mike Freitas starred with his one-handed catches of fly balls. The Honirons have been in the game since 1906, and are now playing in the Commercial league.
Many ball fans have the idea that the name "Asahis" means a team representing Japanese ancestry, but the word really means Morning Sun. This team has represented the Japanese community in local baseball circles for a full quarter of a century.
Divided Players During the summer vacation of 1906 we divided our players into four teams and imitated the senior league teams of those days, calling ourselves the H. A. C.s, Kams, Elks and Young Customers. We played daily, two games in the mornings and two in the afternoons. I do not know how long this nameless league operated, but I remember we were challenged by a group of Chinese boys headed by the Lai Tin brothers and by another team led by Henry Kualil and Alex. Asam. To meet these challenges we picked a team from our league and called it the Asahis."

1918 season recap. Rosters with full names - scores listed.
"The Oahu Athletic park was finally dismantled and the baseball center then moved to Moiliili field where the new Pacific league was organized.
The Asahi club was also reorganized and the team joined the Pacific league. The revamped team was coached by the old Asahi catcher, George Y. Murakami. Kenso Nushida, the "boy wonder", was the leading pitcher and Shinichi Yoshikawa was the catcher."
1952-4-25 B. "We've got to do something about local baseball."
Billy Arakawa, a star of yesteryear Asahi teams of the Hawaii Baseball League, authored that statement a couple of months ago.
And Wednesday, several former Asahi players gathered at a dinner for the express purpose of seeing what could be done to further the diamond game among the Nisei boys in Honolulu. The result -a formation of the Asahi Boosters Club.
On hand at the eating confab were oldsters who played for the A's "And the crowds at times numbered in the neighborhood of 17,000," reminisced one of the "grandfathers."
CONDITION FOREMOST
He went on: "While there was money to be distributed among the players, the uppermost thought in our minds was to get into good condition and die for the glory of the Asahi.""
Recalling how the papa sans appreciated their efforts, the oldster, who didn't want to be quoted, continued:
"We who were at the Wednesday gathering, stand ready to do all we can to bring the Japanese fans back to following the Asahi nine. Too many have stayed away in recent years.
"We want to get together with the current bosses and the boys of the team, and work out some sort of a plan to better current conditions."
LOST SIX STRAIGHT
It hit the oldsters pretty hard, according to our informant, when the 1951 Asahi team ran away from the league the first half of the season, then crumpled with six straight losses to lose the title to the Rural Red Sox.
"I don't recall," he said, "when any other Asahi team had such a poignant experience.
"Why, in our day, it was a signal honor to be selected to play for Asahi. That was the goal of all players of Japanese ancestry on Oahu." (The Rural Red Sox was not in the HBL then. The country team entered in 1946.)
1915 [sic] VETS ON HAND
Present at Wednesday's gathering of Asahi old timers were some who were veterans as far back as 1915.
The alumni included Representative Steere Noda, oldest member who played back in 1915, and Clem Moriyama, 1919.
Others on hand: "Crook" Shizuru, Masa (Drop) Nakamori, pitcher on the 1930 championship club. Ole "Drop Ball" won 10 straight games that year.
Masa Okuda, Sam Suzuki, first baseman of the 1926 first Asahi title nine; Bob Tominaga, "Lefty" Ohira, "Tiger" Miyagi, Tsuru Mamiya.
"Wop" Shinagawa, Dr. Yorio Wa- Katake, Toshi Kameda; Eichi (Bayau) Hioki of the '30 championship squad; Seichi Tsugawa, Dr. Katsumi Kometani, a former franchise owner.
George Mamiya, fireball hurler of the '26 team; Jutsumi Yoshida, Itsuko Aoki, Bert Itoga, "Mutt" Nishihara, Sadao Hedani; Dr. H. I. Kurisaki (1921), Moriso Matsuno, probably the greatest pitcher of all Asahi teams; Billy Arakawa, Reuben Kawamoto.
Elected as officers of the Boosters Club:
Arakawa, president; T. Moriyama, vice president; Nishihara, secretary; Hioki, treasurer; Shizuru, auditor. Board of directors-Matsuno, Dr. Wakatake, Rep. Noda T. Mamiya, Itoga and Ohira.
Advisory committee-Dr. Kometani and Dr. Kurisaki."

"The next monarch, King Kalakaua, became the first Hawaiian monarch to attend a baseball game. Cartwright was the king’s financial advisor. The game took place in 1875 between the Athletes and the Pensacolas. Baseball had been growing in popularity since being played at Punahou School in the 1860s. But it is unclear whether Cartwright actually instituted the playing of the game on the islands."

1907-8-23 B. "Danny Long's first taste of Honolulu talent was so delicious that he has passed his plate out for another helping. This translated means that he is negotiating for another Barney Joy. There is a pitcher on the islands who stands six feet in his silk stockings, weighs 200 pounds, and hurls a ball so fast that it resembles a pea passing the plate. This is the sort of a pitcher Long is more than willing to experiment with next year. Barney Joy wised his manager up to the new prodigy, who has already been written to about playing in the Pacific Coast League. At the request of Long big Barney mailed a letter on the last steamer asking if he would consider an offer to play with San Francisco. Joy said yesterday that he thought Reuter, for this is his name, would come through with the big "yes." The following is a little boost which Barney put in for the young pitcher: "Reuter has pitched a lot of ball on the islands, and I have little about him not making good. He is a motorman on one of the railroads, but pitches a game a week at least. He is half Hawaiian, weighs fully two hundred pounds, and throws a ball as far as the next one. He is no southpaw, and when I left home he had as nice control as any pitcher I ever saw work. It is not sure that he would want to come to the Coast, but I have written to him to consider an offer. I have told him what a great country this is for baseball, and here is where he can get the money. I think I will be able to get him for San Francisco for next season, and I ought to receive a letter from Reuter on the next steamer. By the way, I have caught Reuter in a number of games [???] and pitched against him in others. You never saw me catch? Well, I can slam them down to second a bit. Catching used to be my long suit."

"Dick Reuter, who was introduced to Oakland fans yesterday, is a husky fellow with a side-arm delivery, and as he has plenty of speed and sharp breaks to his ball he should be very effective when he has control of his shoots. Whenever he had his spirals dropping in the vicinity of the plate the opposing batsmen couldn't do much with them, but his walks proved disastrous."

"Nine years have passed and there has been a lot of changes in the players. Leslie is a coffee planter in Kona, and almost forgotten by the present-day fans. Henry Bushnell and Eddie Fernandez will once more don the uniform against a Japanese team on Saturday. Pat Gleason is deputy sheriff and still a great fan. George Bruns graduated to be a good umpire, and it is hoped that he continues to make good. Lo On, the speedy Chinese boy, is in Yokohama with a business concern, and still plays the grand old game. John Evers, the former fielding star, has been called out by the Great Umpire, while Oliver Jones is with the Honolulu Traction Company. En Sue is still fast on the bases and will play against the Waseda team on Sunday. Soares has been playing ball since and still retains his interest in the game."

""Johnny," I asked, "what da you think of the influx of major leagues to these isles, along with the Seals making Honolulu their training grounds here? Do you think it helps our ball players?"
"I never missed seeing the big leagues play when they were down here during the war. If our local ball players didn't grasp the tricks and different arts of the game, then they have missed a lot. As for the Seals training down here, I believe that it's one of the best things that has happened to the Island ball players, as well as for the fans.
"Our boys should pick up everything they can possibly learn to better themselves. While we are on the subject of the Seals, I want to tell you that the grand old man-and I dub him the Connie Mack of the Pacific Coast league, namely, Charlie Graham-was my manager when I was playing for the Sacramento ball team. Charlie sold me to the Detroit team in the American league."
Likens Ferris Fain to Hal Chase.

1946-3-29 Pacheco. Kan Yen (Kanky) Chun, one of the great catchers of his day. Was with Mid-Pacific and Punahou - at Punahou he and Scotty Schuman were alternating battery mates - one would catch when the other pitched, and vice versa.
Played with the All-Chinese from 1912 to 1915. Only weighed 134 pounds but was a heavy hitter and had a strong arm. Toured the mainland several times with the All-Chinese - a member of the Hawaii All-Stars that dominated on their tour of Japan in 1921.
Is presently general manager of Waikiki Tavern. [Winter League?]
1946-4-08 Pacheco. G.W. "Scotty" Schuman, baseball and football star at Punahou. Most known for involvement with football.
1946-4-25 Pacheco. Joseph (Wee Wee) Ornellas - born in Kohala, Hawaii. Played senior league ball with the P.A.C.s from 1910-13; that league played at the old Athletic Park.
"One of the interesting incidents "Wee Joe" likes to relate happened in 1912.
"When the All-Chinese came back from a barnstorming tour of the mainland in 1912, they figured they were pretty good and didn't want to play any of the local teams for less than 70 per cent of the gate receipts," he recalled.
"Well neither side gave in, so the PAC's challenged the All- Chinese to play on a winner take all basis. We played and beat them, 7 to 1. We had Tony Medeiros pitching and Louie Soares catching, with "Sticks" Frazier at first base. Our team captain was Manuel Freitas, and Andy Bushnell was our shortstop."
Although he was too modest to admit it Joe was a very good hitter and a crackerjack base thief.
He said games in those days were well attended. "We always had big crowds. We played fast baseball, and it wasn't anything to finish a game in around one- hour and five minutes," he stated.
"Wee Joe" considers his greatest game the one his team played with Stanford university. After Stanford had beaten every team here, except the All-Chinese who were on the mainland, the PAC's engaged the visitors and won, 1-0, in 12 innings, at the Athletic Park before a capacity crowd. Tony Medeiros and Soares again formed the winning battery. Joe said players in those days played baseball for the love of the game.
"We had some good hitters in our time. I believe if we had the lively ball of today, home runs would have come pretty cheap," he declared.
"We Joe" still follows baseball very closely, but his chief business is his bar on Hotel street."

He didn't play much baseball after returning from mainland, but says:
"In 1922 I was appointed judge of the domestic relations court in Honolulu by President Harding. However, I more or less managed ball teams after my appointment to the bench.
"We had a team called the Ha- waiians. The president was William H. Heen, now a senator, and Leon Sterling, city-county clerk, was our secretary. I managed the club which had fellows like Bill Smith, Maltbie Holt, Bill White, Ducky Swan, Lang Akana and Senator Francis Brown, who was part owner of the club. I also take take credit credit for coaching Johnny Kerr while I was managing the Kam prep team." (Kerr is player-manager of the Wanderers in the Hawaii league).

1906-6-21 Biographical information for Harvard & Yale rosters. Castle is 6'0", 150 lb.
Senator. President of Hawaiian Baseball League for several years.
Sonny Cunha
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonny_Cunha 1879-1933 - composer of Hawaiian music.
1896-5-24 SF Examiner. Albert Cunha listed among those who sailed for Honolulu on the steamer Australia yesterday.
1897-8-01 SF E. "From Honolulu there comes again this season to the Pope [House] Mrs. Cunha and son."
1897-8-21 SF C&P. At wheelmen's night at the Mechanic's Fair yesterday, Albert Cunha was awarded a "pocket nail file and comb and silver-mounted case" for being the "fattest wheelmen in cycling costume." His weight was listed as 283 pounds.
1897-9-08 SF E. Performed an instrumental solo as part of the progamme at the Catholic Ladies' Aid Society.
1897-10-16 SF C&P. "Albert Cunha of Honolulu" has joined the California Cycling Club.
1897-12-08 SF C&P. A member of the Lurline water polo club that has accepted the challenge of the Fort Mason water polo club to play for the " 'J.D. Spreckels Challenge Cup.' "
1898-4-23 C&P. "A.R. Cunha, the popular wheelman and ballplayer, will leave for Honolulu in a fortnight on a three months' trip."
1898-4-30 C&P. Entered in annual 100-mile relay race with Bay City Wheelmen.
1898-6-04 C&P. "A. Cunha of the Bay City Wheelmen contemplates a two months' visit to the Hawaiian Islands, beginning the middle of June." (Cycling column)
1898-7-23 SF Chronicle. "Local wheelmen will be surprised to learn that A.H. Cunha, the big catcher of the California Cycling Club's baseball team, and who is also a member of the Bay City Wheelmen, won the novice race at the last Honolulu meet. Cunha is a native of Honolulu, and went there recently to spend his summer vacation."
Headline: "A Good Year for Cycling"
1900-7-22 Boston. Yale catcher controversy.
1900-8-28 B. Quoting SF. Father has ordered him to return home from Stanford. Described as 250 lb.
1901-11-21 Boston. Quoting SF. Wealthy father described. Described as 300 pounds.
1902-5-20 Independent. "But withal the Princess is democratic, or rather neglectful of the dictates of fashion. Her intimate friend is Rosie Cunha, a half-white daughter of a Honolulu saloon keeper who stands all day in his shirt sleeves to wait on his customers, and who has amassed a half million dollars in selling rum to sons of missionaries. Her brother is "Fatty" Cunha, formerly at Yale and later at Stanford, and famous as a football and baseball player. "Fatty" is reading law, supposedly, but spends most of his hours on the beach at Waikiki where the subtle ginfizz is handy. Cunba and Prince David are chums and are usually together when the sensuous strains of the hulahula sound under the waving cocoa plumes in the moonlight, and the sinuous brown bodies of the soft Hawaiian maidens curve to the voluptuous air."
1898-4-22 C&P. Talk. "Manager McGlynn of the San Joses, California League team, has secured a brace of south paws, who, he thinks, will paralyze opposing batters. Wheeler, his mainstay, who belongs to the Third Ar- tillery, found it inconvenient to belong to an out of town team just now, so Mc- Glynn reluctantly sold him to Manager Bunker, and signed Thiessen and Fountain. The former has pitched for the California Cyclers' Club, and both are most effective. McGlynn has also signed a new catcher to receive Thiessen, whose name is Cunha. He weighs 240 pounds, and is said to be one of the fastest men in the game. Ford will be Fountain's battery"
1898-4-24 Stockton. Local box - Cunha with San Jose.
1898-1-21 C&P. "The third match for the Spreckels challenge cup between the Fort Mason polo team and the Lurline Swimming Club took place last evening at the Lurline baths, in the presence of a large number of spectators. The Lurline boys found the soldiers easy victims, and they won with hands down by the score of 9 to 2."
A.S. Cunha played right back for Lurlines.
1898-2-18 The Lurline amateur water polo team justified its claim to the water polo championship of the Pacific Coast by beating the professional California Swimming Club 4-0.
"Cunha is a model back. His throwing was excellent, and the ball never stayed near the Lurlines' goal long."
