"With the skies well screened with clouds and the temperature abated to cool comfort, one of the most spectacular games of the season, that between the East End Republican base ball team and the Young Republican base ball team, was played yesterday on the Athletic grounds.
There was the Athletic spirit, not on one side only, but on both. Flies scraped the skies in the same familiar fashion and whirring balls tore the dust of the diamond into yellow clouds. There was the familiar biff and whizz, marking a whirring bump or muff of ball and bat.
And there were the rooters, young and old, men and women, lemons and horns, candy and fireworks, and real base ball. It was a great game.
At two o'clock the crowds began to arrive. Automobiles filled with well- known Philadelphians entered and went whirring around the grounds. Cars filled with out-of-town celebrities, men and women, were among them, and the seats, bleachers and grand stand, began to fill.
At 2.30 the teams came on the diamond and began their practice twirling. This continued until three, when John R. Wiggins in reply to Umpire Clay's "Play ball," tossed a new base ball onto the diamond."

1908-6-03 (5-18 St. Paul via HI) William "Otto" Schfranski made five hits in five at-bats. Center fielder for Mamline University. He was born with a left arm that did not grow beyond the elbow.
"A strong throwing arm offsets whatever delay may be occasioned by Schfranski's style of taking the ball. He wears a glove and after catching the ball tosses it into the air, while slipping off the glove under his left arm. Catching the toss, the ball is sent away, propelled by a powerful throwing arm. He takes hard-hit balls as easily as the high ones.
"At the plate, Schfranski chokes the bat slightly more than the average player balancing it with his stub arm when he begins his swing, which is completed with his right arm. He uses a slight crouch and pulls his drives into left field. He is a fast man on the bases. Schfranski is twenty-one years old and a senior. He was born at Clayton, Minnesota."
